Just a MAGNUS chord organ I came upon a few weeks back. However I was instantly reminded of a friend of mine, Todd A. Taylor. When I toured with a college singing group, we would spend many nights in strangers houses who were kind enough to host us college kids. As this had a tendency to become routine, we would spice up the visit by making up stuff about our room-mate for the evening from the group. This would both frustrate and entertain us. One time I was asked by Todd, "So Mark, tell our hosts about when you were in the olympics." And I would immediately have to come up with something to tell the group. In this instance I explained that I was in the Olympic Trials for the 100 KG wrestling class but that I did not make the final team. However I was satisfied with my 3rd place finish" This is of course, complete fiction. I was a wrestler in high school so that was my inspiration."
On to Todd and why the MAGNUS chord organ inspired me. Todd and I were roommates at this very nice ladies house, somewhere in Ohio I think. The lady had a MAGNUS chord organ in her dining room. I saw this as a great opportunity to get back at Todd for the "Olympics" ordeal. You see, Todd was our accompanist. A very talented one I can tell you.I asked Mrs host if that was a MAGNUS Chord organ and when she replied in the affirmative, I said, "Gee Todd, I'm sure Mrs. so and so would LOVE to hear you play us a tune. You will play for us won't you?". Of course the nice older lady pleaded and Todd had no choice but to fire up the MAGNUS. He shot me daggers and plonked out some barely recognizable hymn for our host. I still smile when see one of these toy organs.
Todd died of an AIDS related illness a few years ago. I sure do miss him.
